About our farm
The farm Matjeskloof is located in the Roggeveld, a mountainous region located in the West of the Great Southern Highlands of Southern Africa. The region forms the Plato above the dry desert like landscape of the Tankwa Karroo. This region is a unique geophyte with expansive variety of plant species, notable especially during the period August to October when the region offer a fantastic display of veld flowers.
The farm is situated at an altitude of 1400m and snow is a regular occurance during te winter months. The bush camp ‘Orion’s Belt’ is situated at an altitude of 1350 meters and do experience freezing night temperatures during the period June to August. ‘Die Gat’ a deep ravine, forms the Northern boundary of the farm. This canyon is approximately 500 meters deep and is the source of the Dorings River. During winter months and periods of extensive rainfall and snow a number of waterfalls form in the canyon that in itself creates spectacular scenes.
Orion’s Belt bush camp is an ideal location to experience the expansive and unique display of the Karroo night sky and the Milky Way. The farm is located in an area of zero light and air pollution, thus providing for incomparable star gazing opportunities.
It is situated to the West from the town Middelpos, approximately 30 kilometers by road. The tiny village of Middelpos was an old trading post and is situated almost equidistant between Sutherland and Calvinia on the R354 and remains probably one of the most authentic Karoo villages in its isolation and remoteness.
